HOLE ONE

A straight, downhill par 4 to start with, a statically placed bunker in the centre of the fairway at 240 yards down the fairway can hamper most golfers if they go with the driver. The green is tucked up and is protected by trees, a boundary hedge behind and sizeable bunker on the right of the green. There isn’t much room to go long, if you miss left, the slope will bring this back towards the green.

PRO TIP
Don’t risk the fairway bunker as its two shots to the green anyway.

HOLE TWO

A second par 4, a slight uphill tee shot, the fairway is narrow with a wider short rough on the left. Play to the left of the fairway to open the green up for your second shot. Two bunkers at the front left and right of the green makes a tricker approach shot. The green has a lot of room if you miss left, right or long.

PRO TIP
Play down the left as the rough is safer than the trees.

HOLE THREE

An uphill short par 4 sounds appealing, keep to the right as the dense treeline down the left is dangerous for the scorecard. The green is close to the left boundary and two high edge bunkers sit on the right. The green is thin but long, so accuracy is key.

PRO TIP
It plays longer than the yardage, play safe and get there in two.

HOLE FOUR

The first of two par 5’s is a straight slog. A light tree line down the right and thick boundary hedge boarders the thin fairway. Keep it in the fairway and its an easy three shots to the green. The green is protected by three large bunkers with little room for error.

HOLE FIVE

The inviting par 3 has a big green to aim for with few hazards to negotiate. Pull it left and it will kick further left, keep it to the right of the green to avoid any difficulty. It’s a lot of green to aim for and a makeable birdie opportunity.

HOLE SIX

Get it on the green with a big target to aim for. If using an iron off the tee, be sure to avoid the lone bunker on the left of the fairway. The left to right fairway narrows as you play down towards the green. There is little room for error around the green as missing right or long will leave you with a very difficult slope out the trees.

PAR YARDS STROKE

PRO TIP
Very difficult to make in two, so go for a comfortable three to the green.

HOLE SEVEN

A short downhill par 3 will play slightly longer than the yardage, playing to a small rear elevated green that can cause a tricky recovery shot if you miss left or long as it will roll down the bank into the rough.

3 164 13

PRO TIP
Club down, if you go short the slope will help it roll onto the green.

HOLE EIGHT

A slight left to right dog leg par 4 offers the opportunity to make the green in one if you feel brave enough to cut the corner. The fairway opens up behind the trees on the right with limited hazards once past the corner. The green is protected by a single bunker on the right of the good sized green.

Going for the green is tempting, but the safest play is two controlled low irons.

HOLE NINE

Finishing off the front nine and playing back towards the club house, this uphill par 4 can be a tricky one. The wide fairway is inviting to use the driver, a hedge runs along the edge of the cart path that cuts across the fairway and can make a difficult approach shot if you are tucked up behind it. The green offers so assist with a raised mound surrounding to catch any loose shots.

You don’t need to go too hard of the tee, just make sure you are up and able to see the green.

HOLE TEN

This slight uphill par 4 is a good hole to start the back 9. Off the tee the big tree on the left of the fairway marks the line of the green. Keep to the middle of the fairway to avoid being hampered by the tree for your approach shot. Beyond that, the fairway opens out and there are limited hazards to contend with. Avoid the three bunkers around the green as these are difficult to recover from.

PRO TIP
Keep to the right of the big tree for the best run to the green.

HOLE ELEVEN

A difficult dog leg par 4. Your tee shot is playing into a smaller landing zone as the fairway sweeps round. If you opt for the driver, an unsighted bunker in the middle of the fairway is within range. The green is tucked against a boundary hedge with a sloped back to the green.

PAR YARDS STROKE
4 395 14
4 279 14
4 273 12
PRO TIP
Play the safer shot you can see, instead of the risky long unsighted one.

HOLE TWELVE

This short, elevated par 3 to an unsighted green shouldn’t be too difficult. There is a lot of green to work with if you go long, just make sure you get it up there. The two bunkers at the front left and right shouldn’t pose too much of an issue.

PAR YARDS STROKE
3 113 18
3 107 18
3 103 16
PRO TIP
Take more club than you think as you don’t want to leave it short.

HOLE THIRTEEN

Another dog leg right, par 4 hole. A good uphill tee shot to a blind but wide landing zone can leave you in a great position for your approach to the green. Playing down the right side using the tree line as a guide is the shortest route but can put you in risk of the bunker. Off the tee, use the middle of the block of trees as your aim point for the safest shot and gives you a straight shot to the green.

PAR YARDS STROKE
4 367 12
4 358 12
4 350 6
PRO TIP
Use the trees as your marker, the tee shot plays shorter than you think.

HOLE FOURTEEN

A pleasant par 3, teeing from an elevated tee you will need to carry difficult rough and a small ditch that runs across the fairway. Playing into a large tear shaped green that is uncaptured by a bank.

PAR YARDS STROKE
3 166 16
3 144 16
3 115 18
PRO TIP
The hazards shouldn’t be a problem, aim for the heart of the green and you will be fine.

Birley Wood Golf Course Hole 15
HOLE FIFTEEN

The hardest hole on the course. A long straight par 4 requires accuracy with the thin treelined fairway. Teeing from an open area the fairway feels even narrower as you play into the opening towards the green. Going off the fairway can cost you. The small green is a tricky target protected by a bunker, hedge and trees.

PAR YARDS STROKE
4 438 4
4 432 4
5 427 8
PRO TIP
A good, accurate, long tee shot is required to make it in two.

Birley Wood Golf Course Hole 16
HOLE SIXTEEN

From the tee, the fairway opens more the longer you go. A ditch splits the fairways down towards the green, but this won’t be in play off the tee. The fairway does roll right to left and has a bit more forgiveness than some. Playing 220-250 will allow for an easier approach to the green which has a greenside bunker on the back right corner.

PAR YARDS STROKE
4 368 8
4 303 8
4 254 10
PRO TIP
If you want to make it in two, your tee shot will need to be 200+ yards.

Birley Wood Golf Course Hole 17
HOLE SEVENTEEN

A downhill par 3, if you come up short you will benefit from the downhill slope as it will kick on. If you are playing from the whites, it’s a long par 3 and opens the margin of error. The small green is a small target, and not one to overshoot as you will either be in the bunker or down the bank in the rough.

PAR YARDS STROKE
3 225 10
3 147 10
3 140 14
PRO TIP
It’s better to be short than long on this hole.

Birley Wood Golf Course Hole 18
HOLE EIGHTEEN

The final hole is an uphill dog leg right par 4. From the tee you can play either, two mid to long irons to reach the green, there is a cart path around 150y yards if you opt of the iron. If you prefer shortening the hole, you can take the tricker drive on. Aim up the right side over the hedge to the heart of the fairway to widen the green for your approach. The green is on a second tier next to the winter green. Keep to the left or middle to avoid missing the green and a tricky chip on.

PAR YARDS STROKE
4 376 6
4 371 6
4 367 4
PRO TIP
Tee shot is up hill, you need to make up the yards to make it in two.
